These images were made by attempting to move specific words (here and there) exactly in-line with the slow-moving imaging device on a flatbed scanner. The smears are created where the human hand cannot move as precisely as the mechanical lens. Linguistically, these two prints explore concept of indexicals, or words that require specific context in order to convey meaning.
