One Minute Ligatures, 2011
animation, 2 minute loop

Ligatures are a typographic alternative when certain letters combinations conflict aesthetically. For example, when the letters “f” and “i” appear next to each other, the “hood” (the upper curl) in the “f” interferes with the tittle (the dot) in the “i.” The ligature replaces these two distinct letters with a new unique character. This project takes the five most common ligatures in the English language and animates them from dis- tinct letters forms into their corresponding ligature, and back again. Each animation lasts one minute.
